The Supreme Court The Supreme Court of the United States consists of nine justices appointed for life by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. (See Figure 2. ) One justice is appointed as the Chief Justice and has additional administrative duties related both to the Supreme Court and to the entire federal court system. Each justice is assigned to one of the courts of appeals for emergency responses. The Supreme Court meets on the first Monday of October each year and usually continues in session through June. The Supreme Court receives and disposes of about 5,000 cases each year, most by a brief decision that the subject matter is either not proper or not of sufficient importance to warrant review by the full court. Cases are heard en banc, which means by all the justices sitting together in open court. Each year the court decides about 150 cases of great national importance and interest, and about three-fourths of such decisions are announced in full published opinions. The Supreme Court is located across the street from the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers. States first established international organizations to cooperate on specific matters. The International Telecommunication Union was founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, and the Universal Postal Union was established in 1874. Both are now United Nations specialized agencies. In 1899, the first International Peace Conference was held in The Hague to elaborate instruments for settling crises peacefully, preventing wars and codifying rules of warfare. It adopted the Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes and established the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which began work in 1902. The forerunner of the United Nations was the League of Nations, an organization conceived in similar circumstances during the First World War, and established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." The International Labour Organization was also created under the Treaty of Versailles as an affiliated agency of the League. The League of Nations ceased its activities after failing to prevent the Second World War. In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks, United States, in August-October 1944. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 member states. The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and a majority of other signatories. United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October each year.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Timberland Co. (TBL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) posted sharply lower quarterly earnings on Tuesday, hurt by weak sales of its signature work boots and higher costs, and slashed its full-year outlook, sending its shares down as much as 13 percent. Timberland, whose fashion-oriented work boots have long been popular with young, urban consumers, has suffered recently as fashion trends have favored high-priced basketball shoes or low-slung European styles over boots. The company cut its outlook due to hefty footwear duties imposed by the European Union. Prudential Financial analyst Lizabeth Dunn called the forecast "shockingly bad" and said it showed a need to balance boot inventories and a weak forecast for boot sales for the fall. Timberland said first-quarter profit dropped to $29.2 million, or 45 cents per share, from $42.2 million, or 61 cents per share, a year earlier, in line with analysts' forecasts. The latest results included $0.5 million in restructuring costs related the 2005 closing of a factory in Puerto Rico and the building of a European service center. Quarterly revenue fell 1.2 percent to $349.8 million. The company said expected declines in boot sales were partially offset by gains in apparel and accessories. Due to the duties on leather footwear imported from China and Vietnam into the European Union, it lowered its 2006 outlook to flat to modest revenue growth and a decline in comparable earnings per share of 20 percent to 25 percent. It previously forecast mid-single-digit revenue growth and moderate declines in earnings per share. Timberland shares were the biggest percentage loser on the New York Stock Exchange, down $4.01 at $30.55 in morning trade after falling as low as $29.83 earlier in the session.

Nobel Prize Lashawn Walker New Sullivan 303 The Nobel Prizes are prizes instituted by the will of Alfred Nobel, awarded to people (and also to organizations in the case of the Nobel Peace Prize) who have done outstanding research, invented groundbreaking techniques or equipment, or made outstanding contributions to society. The Nobel Prizes, which are generally awarded annually in the categories listed below, are widely regarded as the supreme commendation in the world today. As of November 2005, a total of 776 Nobel Prizes have been awarded (758 to individuals and 18 to organizations). However, a few prize winners have declined the award. There may be years in which one or more prizes are not awarded; however, the prizes must be awarded at least once every five years. The prize cannot be revoked.
